SEO Checker | Get Your Free SEO Report & SEO Analysis Now

marketing online resolution May 2, 2021

Our free SEO audit tool offers a comprehensive evaluation of several factors, including:

Page speed

The speed of your website not only matters to search engines but also to users. In fact, more than 80 percent of users expect a website to load in two seconds or less — if the website takes longer, they’ll likely leave, which increases your bounce rate.

That’s why our free SEO checker tests the speed of your page.

It’ll also look at all your site’s assets, from HTML to CSS to JavaScript. If it spots ways to improve your page speed, like by compressing your image files, it’ll notify you in your free SEO report. The best part? It’ll highlight which files to compress.

Next, our SEO analyzer tool checks your URL. In this step, our tool looks at the following factors:

  • Keyword: When you set the keyword of a page, it’s helpful to include the primary keyword in your URL. It helps improve the SEO strategy of your page, which can lead to a better ranking in search results.
  • Underscores: When creating a page URL, it’s a common mistake to separate words with underscores, versus hyphens. That’s why our SEO checker looks for underscores. If it finds any, it’ll notify you in your free SEO report.
  • Top-Level Domain (TLD): When registering your domain name, it’s critical that you choose a top-level domain — “.com” is one example. If you’re a non-profit or government organization, however, you may register “.gov” or “.org.”

Based on these factors, our SEO analyzer will determine if your page is SEO-friendly.

Title tag

We then evaluate the title tag of your page — keep in mind, this may differ from the heading of your page. As an example, you could have the title tag, “Holiday Decorating Guide,” but your heading is, “Your Quintessential Holiday Decorating Guide.”

Our free SEO checker looks at the following features of your title tag:

  • Length: For the best results, title tags should have 60 characters or less. If they exceed that number, search engines won’t display the excess. Instead, they’ll insert an ellipsis, which can leave your title tag without a hook.
  • Keyword: A title tag should also include your primary keyword. While not required, it’s beneficial if your title tag starts with your primary keyword. Our SEO audit tool will let you know if it does.

In most cases, title tags are a quick fix, though they require some brainstorming.

Meta description

Following your title tag, our SEO checker will look at the following features of your meta description:

  • Length: Like a title tag, a description or meta tag also has character limits. Your description tag should not exceed 160 characters — otherwise, it won’t display in search results. It’s worth noting that in some instances Google will rewrite your meta description.
  • Keyword: A meta description should also include your primary keyword — specifically, the exact keyword. That means if your keyword is, “holiday decorating guide,” you want to use that exact keyword and word order, so the phrase, “guide to holiday decorating,” wouldn’t count.

To make your SEO analysis easy to follow, we include your meta description tag in the report.

After our tool assesses your title tag and meta description, it evaluates your heading tags. These tags feature throughout the content of your page and tend to include the keywords you’re targeting. They’re also helpful for readers, as they divide your content into neat, easy-to-follow sections.

Maximize your SEO strategy by including an H1 tag, as well as H2 tags. Depending on your content, you may also have H3 and H4 tags to make your content even easier for audiences to read. Our SEO checker tool will look for H1, H2, H3, H4, and H5 tags — if you’re missing them, we’ll let you know.

Our tool will also look for your primary keyword in your heading tags. To improve your SEO strategy, you’ll want to include your primary keyword in your heading tags, especially your H1 tag. If your keyword would impact the readability of your H2 and H3 tags, consider leaving it out.

In the online world, content is critical. You need to provide your viewers with original content that offers value, or your pages will struggle to rank. Even worse, users won’t stay on your page or convert, which defeats your overall goal.

That’s why our SEO checker provides a comprehensive analysis of your copy and assesses the following:

  • Keyword use: If you’re familiar with search engine optimization, you know keyword stuffing is a black-hat practice. You still want to use your keyword, however. In most cases, use the exact version of your keyword three to four times in your copy.
  • Keyword placement: To help search engines understand your content, it’s important that you use your primary keyword within the first 100 words of your copy — so under your H1 heading. Our tool will let you know if you need to add your keyword to that initial copy.

If our tool spots issues with your copy, it’ll include actionable recommendations in your SEO report.

It’s essential to include images in your copy. By including images, whether pictures or graphics, you’re providing readers with a visual that helps them digest your content. If you’re explaining a complex process, for example, a graphic is invaluable.

Images are also useful in SEO, which is why our SEO checker tool reviews the following:

  • Filename: For your sanity, as well as for search engines, it’s essential you develop a naming system for your image files. Don’t settle for a filename like, “IMG_0001.” Instead, use your keyword — if appropriate — and separate words with a hyphen, not an underscore.
  • Alt tag: Since search engines cannot “read” images, it’s critical that you include an alt tag. Create descriptive, no-fluff alt tags that explain what’s going on in your image. If appropriate, you should include your keyword in your alt tag.

Once you develop a process for naming your images and composing their alt tags, it’ll become a habit.

Page links

Another factor our SEO checker assesses is your page links. In search engine optimization, link building plays a critical role. While your content likely includes links to content on your website, you also want your content to earn links from external websites.

That’s a challenge for many businesses, as you need to create content that’s unique and compelling — content that journalists, users, and publishers can’t help but share. Even if you do publish a piece of exceptional content, you often need to connect with publishers to highlight your one-of-a-kind content.

While our SEO analyzer doesn’t provide tips for how to conduct outreach, it does generate a backlink score, based on the number of links you’ve earned, as well as the number of links you’ve earned from unique domains.

For example, if Martha Stewart links to your guide on holiday decorating twice, that only counts as one unique domain. While those shout-outs are wonderful, you want to have a diverse set of links. That diversity indicates that a variety of websites trust yours.

Mobile analysis

With more than 50 percent of all Internet traffic coming from mobile devices, it’s critical that you have a mobile-friendly website. The fact that Google’s adopted a mobile-first index makes it even more of a priority to support a mobile website.

That’s why our SEO checker does a thorough mobile analysis. It’ll look for the following features:

  • Mobile sitemap
  • Viewport meta tag
  • Compression
  • Tap targets

Like our tool’s coding assessment, you’ll want to forward this part of the report to your development team. They can often make the necessary changes. If you’re without a mobile-friendly website, however, aim to launch a responsive or dynamic website.

The 17 Best Free SEO Tools You Should Use in 2021

marketing online resolution May 1, 2021

A full suite of fantastic SEO tools can make seemingly impossible jobs possible and make our working lives much easier.

The problem is that a full suite of such luxuries is not exactly cheap.

Thankfully, there is no shortage of free SEO tools that can take pride of place on your marketing mantelpiece, so we have broken down the 17 best ones that we think you should be using in 2021.

You will find them grouped into the categories below to make it easy for you to find specific features when you need them:

You can also take a look at our guide to the best free keyword research tools for even more useful resources.

Identifying and managing technical issues on a site should be part of any SEO workflow. Here are some free tools to help you do that:

Google Search Console

Google Search Console is where you can gain insights into your site’s organic performance, and any reported issues such as notifications of manual action penalties. Every SEO concerned with ranking well on Google should be familiar with it.

What it can do:

You can get a full rundown on the tool in our definitive guide to Google Search Console, but as a quick summary, here are some of its main uses:

  • Understanding your site’s SEO performance in terms of clicks, impressions, CTR, and average positions on an individual keyword level – ultimately helping you plan a growth strategy;
  • Inspecting URLs to identify crawling and indexing issues that could prevent it from showing on the SERPs;
  • Finding coverage errors and the cause of these (404 errors, crawl issues, pages blocked by robots.txt and more);
  • Submitting a sitemap;
  • Finding manual actions and security issues;
  • Gaining insights into the backlinks and internal links that Google knows about;
  • Request the indexation of a URL;
  • Informing Google of a domain name change.

We love it because:

It is the best place to see the exact issues that Google sees when it crawls and indexes your site.

On a page-by-page level, you are able to test a URL to understand exactly how Googlebot interprets it, including the user-declared and Google-selected canonical, the date it was last crawled, and much more.

It is the first place you should go to diagnose any issues regarding the way your site appears on the SERPs.Google Search Console URL Inspect

Google PageSpeed Insights

Site speed is not only a ranking factor, but it also impacts the user experience (UX) of your site. Slow pages can prevent conversions and damage rankings, so Google’s free PageSpeed Insights tool is a great way to keep on top of this.

What it can do:

You can use the Google PageSpeed Insights tool to understand your site’s PageSpeed score and learn how to improve it by fixing highlighted issues.

Even if you are not overly technical, you will be able to see the main areas that are affecting the speed of your site, such as image load time or server issues, as well as the areas that are performing well.

We love it because:

It gives you clear suggestions for improvements to your site, and also indicates how much time can be saved by making them – it’s a great way to fine-tune your website’s performance.

Google PageSpeed insights opportunities

Bing Webmaster Tools

Bing has a market share of 25% in the US, which makes it far too big an opportunity to ignore by focusing on Google alone. Bing Webmaster Tools exists to help you manage your site’s appearance on the search engine.

What it can do:

You can get a whole host of insights into your site on Bing Webmaster Tools, including a summary of how well your site is performing and the areas on which you need to focus to improve. It helps you understand how users are finding your site to allow you to prioritize improvements, diagnose site issues and receive alerts and notifications from Bing.

There is a chance your competitors are turning blind eyes to Bing, so you might be able to use this to your advantage.

We love it because:

Bing Webmaster Tools actually gives you more insights into your site’s performance than Google Search Console.

It offers an SEO analysis tool (namely, SEO Analyzer) that gives best practice recommendations, which even bypasses your robots.txt file to allow you to check pages you aren’t yet ready to index.

Bing SEO Analyzer

SEMrush is the comprehensive SEO toolkit that, amongst many other things, allows you to keep on top of all technical matters related to the optimization of your site.

What it can do:

While there are a number of different pricing plans to choose from, a free subscription provides a range of opportunities:

  • You can perform up to 10 searches a day in our Domain Analytics and Keyword Analytics databases;
  • You can use the Keyword Magic tool (without saving searches);
  • You can create and manage a single project (each project includes 12 individual tools);
  • You can crawl up to 100 pages of your site with the Site Audit tool to find issues and opportunities (if you have a registered SEMrush account; a limited crawl of 25 pages is available without an account and can be done here);
  • You can track the positions of up to 10 keywords in the Position Tracking tool;
  • You are given a total of 10 SEO Idea units per month.

Find out more about what you can do with a free subscription here, including checking for up to 130 technical and SEO issues on your site within minutes.

SEMrush site audit

We love it because:

From keyword research through to technical SEO auditing, reporting, and competitive research, SEMrush’s free subscription offers a wealth of features that will make your life easier. It will even give you access to free extensions like SEOquake and glimpses of paid add-on features like the Growth Quadrant for competitive landscape analysis.

Screaming Frog SEO Spider

Screaming Frog SEO Spider allows you to crawl up to 500 URLs with a free account, which allows for a good level of insight into technical issues.

What it can do:

Unlike many other crawlers, Screaming Frog is a desktop-based tool for analyzing and auditing technical SEO issues. From finding broken links and auditing redirects to analyzing meta data and discovering duplicate content, this powerful tool can be used for sites large and small.

We love it because:

Screaming Frog makes it easy to export your findings to a spreadsheet to be used for informing SEO recommendations, so the range of possible analyses can make for useful strategic insights in the long-term.

Sloth helps you use Cloudflare Workers, along with their extensive network of global data centers, to set 301 and 302 redirects, implement hreflang, conduct A/B testing, modify your robots.txt file, and even collect log files.

What it can do:

When working at enterprise level, it is not uncommon to encounter roadblocks when trying to implement solutions to fairly common SEO tasks, such as redirects to hreflang tags.

Sloth lets you use Cloudflare Workers to execute JavaScript on the side without impacting the underlying infrastructure, which means you are able to clear any obstacles to get your tasks done.

We love it because:

This free tool puts you back in control of many essential SEO tasks, so you don’t need to rely on developers or find workarounds to restrictions imposed by a CMS or a server.

Hreflang Tags Testing Tool

Google’s John Mueller has previously said that implementing hreflang is one of the most complex parts of SEO; using Merkle’s hreflang Tags Testing Tool is one way to make it that little bit easier to check for any errors.

What it can do:

Whether you are implementing hreflang tags in HTML, HTTP headers, or an XML sitemap, mistakes can be easy to make.

This free tool from Merkle lets you enter a URL, select a user agent, and test your implementation to help you spot issues and resolve them as soon as possible.

Merkle's hreflang testing tool

We love it because:

It means you can spot problems with hreflang implementation within minutes, and understand the alternate URLs and the targeted region.

Diagnosing such issues can be time-consuming and frustrating, but when you are able to see the annotations presented in a clear format, spotting that one incorrect tag couldn’t be simpler.

Given that WordPress now powers 35% of the web, there is a reasonable chance that it is your CMS of choice. If it is, there are many free tools that can help you get the most out of the platform from an on-page SEO perspective.

Let’s look at a few here.

Rank Math

Rank Math is arguably becoming the go-to WordPress SEO plugin, with more than 300,000 installations to date.

What it can do:

The tool covers everything from optimizing your page titles and meta descriptions and monitoring 404 errors, to creating XML sitemaps and identifying fresh content opportunities.

It will even recommend the ideal settings to help you run a fully optimized WordPress site.

Rank Math’s SEO suite includes the following features:

Rank Math Features

We love it because:

Unlike some WordPress SEO plugins, you get complete control over what you use and what you don’t thanks to its modular framework, which means you can pick and choose your features with more freedom than you would get with an all-in-one plugin. Rank Math modules

Yoast SEO is a free WordPress plugin that makes optimizing your site as simple and straightforward as it should be for beginners.

What it can do:

Since it is fully integrated with the Gutenberg WordPress editor, Yoast SEO gives you complete control over your site’s optimization for specific keywords. Its built-in support also means that complex tasks like adding structured data blocks for how-tos and FAQs are made much easier.

Yoast structured data blocks

We love it because:

Yoast SEO makes it incredibly straightforward to manage your on-page optimization yourself, so it is great for people who run their own business.

Once you have entered the focus keyword for a page, the tool gives you a number of pointers for must-fix problems and improvements, but it also shows you what you have already optimized correctly.

It uses a simple traffic light system that shows where improvements can be made on a page-by-page basis, so it is a great way to look after the individual elements of your onsite optimization efforts.

Yoast SEO plugin suggestions

Building great links is a game of patience, but there are many ways to optimize the process with tools to make sure you are being as productive as possible. Here are some great examples:

One of the most time-consuming tasks in an outreach campaign is finding the correct email address for prospects, but this is where hunter.io can save you hours on Google or social media. The best bit is that you can use it for free to find up to 50 email addresses every month.

What it can do:

Hunter provides a way to find the most common email pattern for a particular domain, so you can be confident you are pitching to the right address. It can save you hours of work (and frustration) on each campaign.

We love it because:

Each returned email address comes with a confidence score based on where it has been found (and a link to each source).

This is a great way to figure out the email structure at any given publication – all you need is a name.

Hunter.io find email

Earning links from the press isn’t easy. In fact, it is a link building tactic that many SEOs struggle with, but HARO (Help a Reporter Out) is a great way for you to receive and respond to specific requests for sources and quotes that journalists put out each day.

What it can do:

HARO will send you three source request emails every weekday, broken down by industry. Within these, you will find requests from journalists across a range of chosen topics.

If you see a request that aligns with your expertise and you could easily provide a suitable quote, you can go ahead and respond to it to share your insights. If yours is chosen as a source, you could see yourself featured in the final article alongside a link to your site.

HARO email

We love it because:

It makes it easy for anyone to earn great links from the press simply by sharing their expertise. It should only take a few minutes each day to check through the source requests, but the opportunities can be huge.

Those without PR experience, a dedicated team, or a big budget can still benefit from authoritative links with minimal effort and resource.

Streak is a free Gmail extension that lets you track email opens. It is perfect as a free solution for tracking your outreach emails and gaining valuable insights to help tailor your campaign follow-ups and re-pitches.

What it can do:

In order to maximize the success of your outreach efforts, you need to know who has opened your emails and how many times they have done so, as well as who has not opened them.

Whilst most dedicated outreach tools have this functionality built in, they can be costly, so, if you’re working to a budget, Streak is a fantastic solution to get the insights you need to make your campaign a success.

Streak email tracking

We love it because:

You can do a better job of tailoring your follow-ups when you can see how each of your prospects reacted to your initial email, making your outreach campaigns much more personal.

You don’t need separate tools; you can see these insights in your Gmail inbox, so it can slip seamlessly into your natural workflow.

Competition for local customers can be tough for small businesses, but there are some excellent free tools available to help maximize visibility and drive growth on the SERPs.

Google My Business

Google My Business

If you run a business with a physical store or one that serves customers at their locations, use Google My Business (GMB) to claim your business listing and appear on Google Maps, in the Knowledge Panel, and in the Local Pack.

What it can do:

Unless you create and optimize your GMB listing, you are not going to be able to appear in key locations on local SERPs.

If you want to stand out against your competitors for local searches for opening hours, photos, videos, reviews, Q&As, and more on Google, then Google My Business is the only way.

Google Knowledge Panel

We love it because:

It is possible to gain a significant competitive advantage if you are prepared to put in the time and effort to optimize your GMB listing.

Your competitors might treat it as a ‘set and forget’ listing, which means they will miss out on opportunities to add new posts, keep Q&As up to date, respond to reviews, add photos, and upload offers.

Tracking and analyzing your data with the right tools is essential if you are to run an effective strategy informed by insightful reports. Here are a few that should be on your list:

Google Analytics

Google Analytics is a free tool that no marketer should be without; the fantastic insights it offers can help inform decisions in almost every area of your strategy.

What it can do:

The ability to report on and analyze metrics like number of sessions, unique visitors and conversions will help you develop a detailed understanding of your traffic, including where it came from, where it went on your site, how it engaged with your content, and where it exited.

You can even get detailed user data, such as demographics and device usage, to help inform your strategy.

Google Analytics insights example

We love it because:

It is the most cost-effective analytics platform for businesses of all shapes and sizes to nurture their traffic generation activities.

The fact that you can demonstrate success (and failure) with statistical evidence is a powerful way to boost any kind of SEO strategy.

Google Data Studio

When you need to create an engaging SEO report, check out Google Data Studio for opportunities to utilize interactive dashboards and visualize your site’s performance.

What it can do:

Whilst Analytics is a fantastic tool for understanding the behavior of your site’s users, there are often times when you need to combine such data with those from other tools, such as Google Search Console.

Data Studio lets you do just that with its effective reporting dashboards that utilize multiple sources – it even lets you merge them if necessary.

It is one of the best free reporting tools out there for showcasing the results of your marketing efforts.

Google Data Studio report

We love it because:

Data Studio helps you to see the trends that some other tools don’t, and, alongside it being a fantastic way to create fully customizable and engaging reports that show real-time data, historical comparisons and more, it won’t cost you a dime.

As stated by Google, “Blending sources can reveal valuable relationships between your data sets. Creating blended charts directly in Data Studio removes the need to manipulate your data in other applications first, saving you time and effort.”

Some tools might not naturally fit into a certain category, but that doesn’t mean they can’t be fantastic additions to your marketing toolset. Let’s take a look.

SERP volatility is fairly common. We all see fluctuating results from time to time, but it can be difficult to know whether this is caused by an algorithm update that’s getting rolled out or by new competitor activity.

SEMrush Sensor tracks Google’s volatility each day and helps you see how much rankings are fluctuating in your market.

What it can do:

You should always be keeping a watchful eye on the SERPs you are ranking on, but such a task is made easier with a tool that does it for you.

You can use SEMrush Sensor to see whether or not there are significant fluctuations in rankings and to look for signs of a Google algorithm update, which will prompt you to check your own site’s performance in more detail.

You do not need an SEMrush account to use the tool; it is completely free.

SEMrush Sensor

We love it because:

It gives you the bigger picture of fluctuations on the SERPs by allowing you to not only drill down into details of the keywords you rank for, but also see movements in other sectors.

Panguin Tool

Algorithm updates can affect any site that is deemed to be offering a poor user experience, but fluctuations on the SERPs don’t always make sense to everyone at first. The Panguin Tool is the ideal free way to investigate these fluctuations.

What it can do:

The tool allows you to quickly see whether or not your site has been impacted by a recent or historic update to Google’s algorithm.

Within seconds, you can connect your Google Analytics account to the Panguin Tool and overlay numerous algorithm updates onto your traffic graph, which will let you identify any potential causes for drops in traffic.

Panguin Tool graph

We love it because:

It streamlines the process of checking your traffic performance against algorithm updates, so you no longer need to switch between tabs and match up the dates yourself.

What could take hours manually only takes a few minutes with the Panguin Tool, which means you have an excellent free way to help you deal with past and future algorithm updates.

Did We Miss Anything?

We hope you have discovered a few new tools that will improve your workflow without putting a dint in your budget.

There is almost no end to the number of amazing innovations in our industry, but we have tried to capture a shortlist of the best ones here.

If we have missed your favorite tool, let us and other readers know by leaving a comment below.

Do outbound links matter for SEO? • Yoast

marketing online resolution April 29, 2021

Michiel Heijmans

Michiel was one of our very first employees and used to be a partner at Yoast. Kick start your site optimization with his articles!

Avatar of Michiel Heijmans

In our plugin, we have a check for outbound links. Is there an outbound link on your post or page? And in case there isn’t one, please add an outbound link to your content! Why do we insist on adding a link like that? Isn’t it true that you should get links to your website, and to your website only? Well… Not per se.

Table of contents

Having a red or orange bullet for the outbound links check? Here’s what this check does and here’s how to solve it.

What are outbound links?

There are a gazillion types of links. The most common ones are these, we believe:

  • Internal links from one page on your website to another page on your website. They can help optimize your site for search engines, we have an internal links tool for that. And with the site structure course in our Premium training subscription, you can learn how to do your internal linking well.
  • And then, there are two types ofexternal links:
    • Links from other websites to yours. We call these inbound links or backlinks.
    • Links from your website to another website. Outbound links, indeed.

The outbound links check in Yoast SEO focuses on the latter: links from your website to another website.

What does the outbound links check do?

The outbound links check counts the number of links you’ve added to your post or page. It counts nofollowed and followed links. Followed means that search engines can follow these links, add value to the article, and perhaps rank it higher. Nofollowed links don’t let search engines follow them through to the other website. That way, they don’t contribute or add value. We’d rather see followed links! That’s why you’ll have to add at least one followed link to get a green feedback bullet. If you’ve purposely only added nofollowed links, your bullet for this check will turn orange instead of green.

Screenshot showing a green feedback bullet for the outbound links checkThe outbound links check shows a green bullet in the SEO analysis.

Link to your resources!

Did you get an orange or red feedback bullet for the outbound links check? Then turn it green by adding at least one followed outbound link to every article you write. Which sources did you consult and which ones gave you the right answer? Refer and link to them, because they deserve it. You’d like others to do the same for you. It goes without saying that you should choose links that are relevant to your visitors. And if you think your visitors might like to learn more about a subject and you don’t want to offer that specific content yourself, send them over to someone who does. If we all link to the sources we consider the best, they end up higher in the search results and we all benefit!

Why we want you to add outbound links to your post

At Yoast, we feel that every page should include an outbound link. We feel so strongly about this because our mission is ‘SEO for everyone’. We very much believe in equal chances for everyone on a connected web. By asking you to add that outbound link, we ask you to connect your website to the next website. And that website to the next website. By doing so, we create a web that expands and expands, from one related website to another. We help Google to connect the dots. We help Bing to get insights on what sites, or rather what pages relate to each other.

By connecting the web, and structuring the web with your help, we help search engines find interesting websites. We help interesting websites rank in Google. With your help. SEO for everyone.

So.. do outbound links matter for SEO?

Outbound links most definitely matter for SEO. Not per se for your SEO, but for SEO in general. Your link helps your neighbor, your supplier, your customer, and of course, your visitor. So we strongly believe there is a good reason we have a check for them in our Yoast SEO plugin!

11 Do-it-yourself SEO Tips to Save Money

marketing online resolution April 28, 2021

Search engine optimization takes time and money. If you’re short on time but have the money, an agency or consultant is an option. If you’re short on money, use these do-it-yourself tips to boost your site’s organic rankings.

1. Improve Title Tags

Look at your highest-level category pages. My research shows that ecommerce category pages should drive up to 32-percent more organic search traffic than product pages.

Sometimes a small, common-sense tweak to a title tag can make a big difference, especially if your ecommerce platform generates default titles based on the labels in your taxonomy and the site’s name. This can result in title tags such as “Women’s – [Your Site].”

Do your title tags make sense? Can you make them more specific or relevant? For example, adding “shoes” to the title tag above could be a common-sense tweak: “Women’s Shoes – [Your Site].”

2. Master Keyword Research

A sound SEO program relies on keyword research to:

  • Know the words and phrases of real searchers,
  • Determine which keywords to target,
  • Gauge demand for your products.

Marketers tend to use the jargon of their industry and brand. Don’t assume that you know what consumers want and how they search — do the research.

The best keyword tools offer a demand score for each theme. Google Keyword Planner is the free, go-to keyword research tool, though you’ll need an active Google Ads campaign to access the most useful data.

Most other quantitative keyword tools require a paid subscription. But some still suggest keywords, for free, without providing data on popularity.

3. Understand Your Competition

Identify your organic-search competitors — not necessarily the sites that sell exact products and services, but also informational sites and massive retailers that compete for the same phrases. Wikipedia, Vogue magazine, and Walmart are your competitors if they’re taking up room on the search results page. Ask yourself:

  • What are they doing well in organic search?
  • What content themes do they include that you don’t?
  • How do they structure their site to target valuable keywords?
  • How do they engage shoppers?

Also, study their reviews and social media activity to identify products or site info that could improve your own offerings and user experience.

4. Map Keywords

Knowing what consumers want and the search phrases they use, map keywords to each page on your site.

Create a spreadsheet of all critical pages in your site’s navigation and map unique primary and secondary keywords to each. Create new pages for unassigned high-value keywords.

Use long-tail keyword themes that drive fewer searches and are typically more specific — such as “how to get red wine out of carpet” or “ex9116 exalt 18v battery charger” — in blog posts, FAQ pages, and product pages.

5. Optimize Your Site

With your keyword map in-hand, the next step is implementing on-page SEO, including:

  • Updating the content on the pages to include the keywords;
  • Creating new pages (for unassigned keywords) with text and, potentially, graphics, audio, and video;
  • Launching a new, keyword-rich section, such a blog or education portal.

Focus on the relevance of the textual elements of each page — the title tags, meta descriptions, headings, body content — to the keyword themes that searchers use.

6. Produce Regular Content

Create ongoing content tailored to your audience. You don’t have to kick out a new blog post or other content every day. That’s unrealistic for many ecommerce sites. Just publish unique content at least monthly, if not weekly. Consistency is key.

“Content” does not need to be only text. Use illustrations, product photos, how-to videos, or any other content that helps shoppers. Delivering value is vital. If the content doesn’t fill a need or engage your customers and prospects, you’ve wasted your time and theirs.

7. Boost Link Equity

Link equity is the quantity of high-quality, topically-relevant sites that link to yours. Link equity and contextual relevance are the top two organic ranking factors. Combined, link acquisition and content marketing increase your link equity naturally.

Content marketing for SEO involves creating, say, articles, videos, and podcasts that people want to share and link to. As the number of people exposed to the content increases, so does the potential for links.

Link acquisition, on the other hand, involves:

  • Identifying high-value pages or sites that are topically relevant;
  • Figuring out how to make your content valuable to that site owner; and
  • Reaching out directly to request a link or an arrangement that would lead to a link, such as a guest post or interview.

Google advises site owners to build compelling websites that users want to tell their friends about. This content-engagement approach to SEO is Google’s answer to, “How do I get more links ethically?”

The keyword research in step 2, above, comes in handy as it provides an idea of the most influential and best-ranking sites to approach.

8. Build Your Social Media Network

Social media enables you to connect with your audience. Nurturing those relationships increases the exposure of your content and, thus, the likelihood that some will blog about it or link to it.

Consumer-facing businesses will likely find the most value in Facebook and Twitter. B2B companies usually focus on Twitter and LinkedIn, with Facebook in the mix as well.

If you have attractive images, add Instagram or Pinterest to the list. If you’re open to creating videos, definitely use YouTube.

9. Understand Analytics

You can’t optimize what you don’t measure. SEO requires a basic understanding of Google Analytics (or equivalent) to know which pages to optimize and which are performing strongly.

In Google Analytics, go to Acquisition > All Traffic > Channels. Click on “Organic Search” and then change the Primary Dimension to “Landing Page.” You can then analyze your SEO performance.

Beware of the “Keyword” dimension, though. No analytics program can accurately track which keywords referred organic search traffic to your site. Only the analytics for each search engine, such as Google Search Console’s Performance report, can do that.

10. Read SEO Posts

Study an SEO guide such as my “SEO How-to” series. Other helpful and free beginner SEO guides include Moz’s “The Beginner’s Guide to SEO,” Search Engine Land’s “Guide to SEO,” and Google’s “Search Engine Optimization Starter Guide.”

For quick updates on SEO changes, try two YouTube channels: Moz’s “Whiteboard Friday” and “Google Webmasters.”

Also, read trusted SEO blogs.

11. Ask Questions

If you are stuck, ask questions in one of the many SEO communities. Google’s Webmaster Forum is a helpful place to start. Participants include Google employees, SEO professionals, marketers, and developers. Other popular forums are WebmasterWorld Forum and Moz’s Q&A Forum. Facebook and LinkedIn also have SEO communities.

Twitter is a popular vehicle to ask the SEO community for advice. Make sure to include a hashtag such as #seo, #seoquestion to increase your chances of being seen by someone who can help.

Never forget, however, that there’s a lot of SEO misinformation. Try to vet the source.

14 Easy Ways to Make Extra Money at Home

marketing online resolution April 27, 2021

Opinions expressed by Entrepreneur contributors are their own.

Making some extra side hustle cash doesn’t actually have to be that complicated. As someone who’s been immersed in the field of online income generation for nearly two decades now, I can tell you that it takes some work. However, there are several clear paths forward. At the end of the day, it all boils down to what your goals are and just how much you’re looking to automate your income.

Could you make an extra $200 per month? Sure. How about an extra $1000 per month? How would that change your life? To most, it would make a monumental difference. But what if  we were talking thousands more per month or even tens of thousands more? How would that alter the trajectory of your life? Clearly, you can make money on the internet. You just have to decide how much of your time it’s worth.

While we all have some extra time, it often doesn’t feel like it. But it also doesn’t take too much effort to make some extra dough on the side. We’re not talking about millions upon millions here — we’re mostly talking about doing small, bite-sized projects to generate some fast cash. And depending on your skill set, you could easily make a few hundred dollars or even a few extra thousand per month.

1. Become a virtual assistant.

One simple way to make money from home is to help others complete tasks as a virtual assistant. If you’re highly organized and can properly manage your time, then becoming a virtual assistant presents a low-friction entry point into the digital services industry. You can easily perform these functions as a remote worker no matter where you live.

Finding work as a virtual assistant can be easily done through sites like Upwork, Indeed.com and Remote.co. Search the existing posted jobs and create bids. You’ll need effective communication skills and fluency in English and popular web and business software applications.

2. Sell stuff on eBay or Craigslist.

A large subset of our society is earning a full-time income by selling items on Craigslist and eBay. You can do this by selling your own items, or you can help sell items for other people and take a small commission. Selling on eBay offers more friction than Craigslist and you’ll need to establish solid reviews before you can begin to move high-ticket items.

However, eBay does provide resources for sellers to help you get acclimated to selling on the platform. Take the time to do your due diligence and research the platform. If you have some solid online marketing skills, you’ll find this much easier than if you’re a complete newbie to the world of digital marketing.

3. Trade cryptocurrency.

As the digital world evolves, so does our currency. What seemed like a novelty yesterday will ultimately become the preferred medium for money. A Gallop poll found that 10 percent of people claimed to use cash as their preferred payment method in 2016 (down from 19 percent in 2011).

While cryptocurrency is still relatively new, it will ultimately become the standard. Bitcoin and Etherium might be the primary cryptocurrency platforms today, but the US Dollar will eventually become the Digital Dollar by leveraging the blockchain. You can take advantage of the current boom in cryptocurrency by trading it through platforms like eToro and Kraken, amongst many others.

4. Online tutoring

Websites like Skooli, Tutor Me and Tutor.com provide resources for entering into the online tutoring space. While you don’t need to use a platform like these, they provide a lower friction entry point into the market. You could also search for online tutoring gigs on a variety of other sites like Upwork, Freelancer and many more.

What types of things can you tutor online? You could easily tutor a subject like math or science, while also teaching a language if you’re bilingual. You could also tutor musical instruments like the guitar or piano, along with a slew of other subject matters.

5. Sell services on Fiverr

Fiverr has grown significantly since its inception. Today, it’s a vast marketplace where you can sell just about any service under the sun. This is great if you’re looking to make money online as a digital nomad or even while sitting at home on your laptop while in your pajamas.

What, specifically, can you sell on Fiverr? Anything from graphics and design services, to digital marketing, writing and translation services, video and animation services, music and audio, programming and application development, business services and lifestyle services that includes anything from celebrity impressions to gaming.

6. Build sales funnels.

Every successful business has an automated sales funnel. Yet, so many businesses are completely unaware of the power of an effective funnel. Sales funnels provide automation in the sales process. They help you build a relationship with your audience and develop a bond with the consumer. There are plenty of tools you can use to build a sales funnel, but the world’s most successful businesses often create custom-coded funnels.

Expert sales funnels often start with a free offer, also called the lead magnet. By delivering value in the lead magnet, you’re creating trust with the consumer. In the next step, you’d usually find what’s called a self-liquidating offer or a trip wire. These are deals that are hard to pass up, often for $7 to $47. The front-end offer is usually found beyond that along with one-time offers to help boost the lifetime value of the customer and the average cart value.

While there are considerable technique details when it comes to sales funnels, understanding them today, right now, could set you up for a higher degree of online marketing prowess. It’ll also help you scale your business by optimizing a conversion rate, then simply expanding your ad spend.

7. Rent out your home.

Another way you can make money at home is to actually rent out your home. AirBnB has carved a sizable industry out of vacation rentals. While the market did exist prior to AirBnB’s arrival, it’s certainly grown by leaps and bounds since its arrival on the scene.

In 2017, AirBnB purchased luxury vacation rental provider, Luxury Retreats, and other consolidations in the marketplace have happened with leading sites like InvitedHome’s acquisition of PPG rentals and Seasoned Dreams’ platforms, and Expedia’s $3.9 billion acquisition of another vacation rental giant, HomeAway. The market is booming and the time is ripe for entry, no matter how big or small your home or condo might be.

8. Launch an ecommerce site.

Ecommerce is booming. While Amazon takes the lion’s share, consumers are buying by the droves when they can scoop up great offers. In fact, some of the leading online marketers like Neil Patel, Frank Kern, Dean Graziosi, David SharpeJohn Reese and many others, are using free-plus-shipping ecommerce and book funnels to make small fortunes. This comes back to the implementation of sales funnels within an ecommerce environment. In fact, much of what people think about traditional ecommerce stores taking months or even years to build and costing a small fortune simply isn’t true.

9. Start a blog.

Blogs are quite possibly one of the best ways to earn a passive income, even while traveling the world. While starting a blog might be simple you will need to put in the work and the effort in order to reap the benefits. Plant the seeds now to enjoy the harvest later.

However, once that blog gets going, generating an income and scaling out your business is straightforward. Simply produce more content and line up more offers. As your blog grows in popularity, you’ll also be able to attract top talent willing to write for you simply in exchange for one very powerful link back to their own websites.

10. Build a side hustle business.

There are plenty of ideas for lucrative side hustle businesses that you could easily start from the comfort of your own home. While starting them is easy, actually putting in the work to market and grow those businesses is a bit more challenging. The hard part is seeing them through.

While you could launch a regular business selling someone else’s products, you could also invent your own product. While businesses based on inventions might seem more complex to create, they do present attractive investment opportunities as depicted on popular shows like Shark Tank.

11. Create webinars

I’ve become obsessed with the webinar medium for selling. Building out automated webinars is one of the most useful skills you could possibly have, like entrepreneur Jason Fladlien, who’s done of $100 million in sales through webinars by only selling other people’s products and not his own.

Webinars follow a specific template and format. They’re formulaic. If you can master that formula, you can quite literally dominate in this space. Find a great business idea or opportunity that you can sell that delivers massive amounts of value.

12. Social media management.

Social media management is a great way to generate an income from home. Considering the expansion of social media, businesses are clamoring to find their way in front of prospects. However, most businesses haven’t got a clue about how they can increase their exposure. That’s where you come in.

Building a social media management business might take some effort and time, but it’s well worth it. You could charge a sizable monthly fee for each business to help manage their social media, allowing you to earn a full-time income doing this gig.

Liz Benny, the founder of Jinga Social, not only built one of the largest and most well-known social media management businesses out there, but also created multiple seven-figure webinars teaching people, you guessed it, how to launch your own social media management company.

13. Affiliate marketing

Affiliate marketing presents a very low friction entry into selling products online. While you do need some type of audience to sell these products or services to, you could make a significant amount of money from home while doing it. Some products or services have very high earnings per click. That means, if you play your cards right, you could easily make a large profit on conversions by driving traffic to specific offers as long as you target the right interests.

You can find affiliate marketing offers on sites like ClickBank, CJ.com and Rakuten LinkShare, amongst many others. Search for the right offer and ensure that you present it to the right audience and don’t spam people about it. Do your marketing ethically.

14. Create online courses.

One of my absolute favorite ways to make extra money from home is to create online courses. Now, this does take an upfront investment of time. But, as any other passive income generating activity, you do the work once and get paid repeatedly for it.

Take whatever skill you have and find a way to build a course around it. Use sites like Udemy, Ankur Nagpal’s, Teachable or Jonathan Cronstedt’s Kajabi to build those courses then begin marketing.
